Celebrating Independence Day

 

This year, we mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of our nation’s Declaration of Independence as American colonies from Great Britain under the rule of King George III. This milestone reflects a defining moment in history, when individuals from many backgrounds came together—often at great personal risk—to establish a new nation grounded in bold new ideals: liberty, self-governance, and opportunity.

The Declaration of Independence expresses these aspirations through its enduring words:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These principles continue to inspire and guide the vision of our country today.

It is important to recognize that long before independence from England was declared, this land was already home to thriving and diverse communities. Indigenous peoples lived here for thousands of years, shaping rich cultures and traditions. Spanish explorers arrived in the late 1400s, establishing the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States, St. Augustine, Florida, in 1565—decades before the English established Jamestown, Virginia.

For centuries, people of Indigenous, Spanish, and many other backgrounds have contributed to the story of this land. Their presence and influence are an essential part of our shared history.

So, what does this mean for us today? The United States has always been a nation shaped by many cultures, perspectives, and experiences. It is a country built by generations of people—native-born and immigrant—working together to create a stronger, more inclusive future.

As we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Independence on July 4th, let us remember the many generations of people and the rich, diverse history that have shaped our nation into what it is today, and let us continue to embrace the ideals of unity, opportunity, and “liberty and justice for all.
